Desert Island Beers

Goose Island IPA (US)
The taste of craft beer America style - more body and flavour than real ale, more refreshing than lager.  If I was a condemned man this beer (well, not this exact one, but the style of it, within which there are better but harder to find brands) would be my final request.  The piney, grassy bouquet is what hops smell like.  Because it's full of the best hops in the world.

Brooklyn Lager (US)
You'll never be able to look at a can of Bud, let alone drink it, ever again.

De Konink (Belgium)
Normal by Belgium standards, a crisp, malty, refreshing, everyday ale from Antwerp.  Served in a glass called a Bolleke, which means exactly what you think.

Duvel (Belgium)
Or 'Devil' - possibly named because it slips down so much easier than any beer brewed to 8.5% has any right to do.  Let it rest on your tongue for a while and the citrus flavours come out from behind the alcohol like a lover re-entering the room after slipping into something more comfortable.

Rodenbach Grand Cru (Belgium)
Aged in oak barrels for two years, it's sour, not to everyone's taste, wonderfully refreshing on a hot day.

Deus (Belgium)
The increasingly famous champagne beer, matured by the methode champenoise.  Getting harder to get hold of since a lot of hype over it being stocked in upscale restaurants. If you can't get any, try Westmalle Trippel or Kwak instead - beers that are distinctly vinous, and ideally served lightly chilled by the wine glass.

Budweiser Budvar (Czech Republic)
OK so you can get this pretty much anywhere, but it's what all mainstream lagers are supposed to taste like - and very few do.

Thomas Hardy's Vintage ale (UK)
Britain's strongest beers.  For every one you buy to drink, buy one to lay down for five to six years.  In 2011, you will be able to demonstrate to your friends how beer can exceed the richness and complexity of wine.

Badger Golden Champion (UK)
Brewed with elderflowers, this is the true taste of summer evenings.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout (UK)
Wave goodbye to dessert wines after you try this with any chocolatey pudding.
